Aegon Pet Insurance in the Netherlands

Aegon has been one of the best-known insurers in the Netherlands for years, and you can turn to them for many different types of policy. Did you know, for instance, that alongside the usual cover such as health insurance you can also take out pet insurance? It can save you an enormous amount of money if you have an animal that has to see the vet often. In this article we take a look at Aegon’s pet insurance. Read on for more information.

What does Aegon pet insurance cover?

The most frequently chosen pet insurance at Aegon is an ‘optimal’ policy. What is good about this policy is that a great many costs are reimbursed by the insurer. Let us look at what Aegon actually reimburses.

Aegon reimburses all damage in the event of an accident, in cases where treatment is required. The vet’s fee is paid in the event of an accident as well. That applies to treating and monitoring the animal at the clinic. Operations, admissions and stays in animal clinics are all reimbursed too, although this applies only to the ‘optimal’ package and not to the basic package.

With the optimal package, Aegon pet insurance also reimburses the costs you incur for having your dog chipped and neutered. That is the case with virtually every policy, but at Aegon you get the full amount back. These costs are covered in full.

All the medicines your pet needs are reimbursed as well. They do have to be medicines prescribed by a vet, so they must appear in the medicines register. No reimbursement is given for alternative remedies or for products you can obtain outside the vet. Finally, having an animal put to sleep is reimbursed too. It is something you would rather avoid, but animals simply do not live forever. With other insurers you usually have to pay part of the cost of euthanasia yourself.

You can also choose to take out dog insurance with Aegon, so your loyal four-legged friend has some certainty when it comes to costs. This policy can likewise be split into two different types. You can choose between the basic package and the so-called ‘Optimal’ package. That second form of cover reimburses more costs, although the premium is of course a good deal higher than with the basic policy.

When we look more closely at Aegon’s basic policy, we see that the standard costs are in fact all covered. Think of the standard costs that arise when your dog has been involved in an accident. If the dog needs an operation, that is possible with the basic version, which is very welcome at Aegon.

The ‘Optimal’ policy has several advantages, though, because it also reimburses the costs you incur for your dog’s medication. You get back all the costs involved in an operation as well. Think of an operation on the animal’s eyelid, for example. Those costs can mount up considerably, and this policy can save you a lot of money. Nor will you have to pay anything when your animal is given the injection to put it to sleep; that too can all be claimed back from Aegon. This Optimal policy is considerably more extensive than the basic policy.

Aegon cat insurance

At Aegon there is a cat insurance policy you can take out for your cat. This policy can be split into two types. You can choose between the basic package and the so-called ‘Optimal’ package. The second option of course covers more costs.

When we look at Aegon’s basic package, we see that the standard costs are all reimbursed. Think in particular of the standard costs that arise in the event of an accident. If your cat needs an operation, you can submit the full price to Aegon, which is of course a big advantage.

The ‘Optimal’ policy goes a step further, because it also reimburses the costs you incur for your cat’s medicines. You get back all the costs relating to various kinds of operation as well, including removing an eye. These are often not cheap, so over a year they can add up to considerable savings. Nor will you have to pay anything to have your animal put to sleep; you get all of that back when you choose Aegon’s Optimal policy for your cat.

How do I claim with Aegon?

A considerable share of pet owners is switching to pet insurance. That is mainly because it can save you a lot of money, but not everyone knows how to submit a claim. That needs to change, so we will now show you how to claim with Aegon.

Step 1: Go to the Aegon website

Submitting a bill at Aegon is not too complicated. It can be done quickly and easily on the site. First you have to go to the site itself, where you will find a page with the claim options somewhere on the screen. Click the link that takes you through.

Step 2: Gathering all your details

Before a bill can be reimbursed, you first need all your details to hand for entering the information. Those details are needed to claim the costs back. The most important thing is that you have the invoice the vet gave you, because it sets out virtually everything needed to claim for that specific bill.

Step 3: Check whether approval is required

It may well be that you need approval for a particular bill before you can get the amount back. That is not really an issue for cheaper treatments, but for an operation such as removing a tumour it is necessary. On Aegon’s site you will find an overview of the costs that require this kind of approval.

Step 4: Watch out for the small print

Every policy comes with small print; that is simply how it works. It sets out the conditions that apply to the policy you have taken out. Before you submit your claim you should read it through carefully to make sure you have not overlooked anything.

How do I cancel my Aegon policy

No insurer likes to see you go. That would be a little odd, after all, since an insurer wants to keep as many customers as possible. At Aegon it is of course possible to cancel a policy, and to make it a bit easier we will help you along. So let us look at everything you need in order to cancel a policy

Step 1: Go to your account on the Aegon website

In the first year an Aegon policy is not yet open to cancellation, which is something we see with other policies as well. Aegon has this arrangement too. You can stop a pet insurance policy yourself through the site, on the same page where claims are handled at Aegon. If you have a multi-year contract, then of course you cannot leave after just one year.

Step 2: Giving the reason

With every policy you will have to give a reason why you want to end the cover. If your pet has died, you can request a special certificate to submit to Aegon. That can then be sent to Aegon to show that the animal is no longer with you. That way you can end your pet insurance easily and without any worries.

Step 3: A change of owner

If you are no longer the owner of the dog or cat, you will have to make that clear to the insurer, in this case Aegon. You can do so with a special document. You can request that proof from the animal shelter or from your local council if you wish. It works the same way here: you send it in and Aegon takes care of the rest of the paperwork.

Why take out Aegon pet insurance?

As you can see above, a great many costs are reimbursed by Aegon. That is also the main reason to choose this pet insurance. You no longer have all sorts of costs to pay yourself. By choosing Aegon you are buying convenience, because you can simply forward virtually every bill to the insurer.

Another advantage is that Aegon is generally rated very well on customer friendliness. That matters with an insurer, because you always want to deal with good communication. On top of that, Aegon is not the most expensive policy, although there are alternatives if you are looking for a true entry-level policy.

Taking out pet insurance with Aegon is therefore not a bad move at all. This policy reimburses a great deal, so you will not lose mountains of money on your pet. Took out this policy last year and I am very glad I did. I have the extra package and submitting claims is very easy. They are dealt with quickly, too. At the end of January my Ragdoll needed urgent help at the vet after being diagnosed with a bone tumour in one of his hind legs. Aegon helped us very well and, despite the short time we had been insured, 90% of the bill was reimbursed. Very happy with this policy; Mawís and I will stay insured for as long as he lives 🙂

Glad we took out insurance with Aegon! We have a Maine Coon (Jack). A beautiful pedigree cat, but pedigree cats can cost a bit now and then. So we decided to take out a policy with Aegon. Jack had never had anything wrong with him, until recently. A bladder infection that would not clear up quickly. So unfortunately we had to make quite a few visits to the vet. And therefore a number of claims to Aegon. Which we found very unpleasant. And we were curious how Aegon would react. But they did not make a fuss and every time they went ahead and reimbursed us.

Fine. As with every policy, do read the terms and conditions carefully so you are not caught out. I have to go to the vet almost every two months myself and I always get a response to my claims and questions within a reasonable time.

Unfortunately we have already had to use the policy a few times, but each time the claim was paid out within two weeks. The option of partial reimbursement for neutering when you take out a policy for the long term is nice too. We are satisfied.

Unfortunately we have already had to use the pet insurance. All the claims that were submitted have been handled properly. The turnaround time for some claims is a bit longer, but in the end they are paid out properly.
