Why insure a Maine Coon?
The Maine Coon is a popular cat breed – large in size, but with a gentle, playful character. If you have a Maine Coon at home, it is wise to consider good cat insurance.
Above you will find an overview of the Maine Coon as a breed, and we compare five Dutch pet insurers (PetSecur, Figo Pet, OHRA, InShared and Univé) on premium, cover, waiting periods, hereditary conditions and more.
This way you choose the best insurance for a Maine Coon to suit your cat and your budget.
Why insure a Maine Coon?
The Maine Coon is known as a “Gentle Giant” – one of the largest domestic cat breeds in the world. Males usually weigh between 6 and 9 kg, females 3.5 to 6 kg. Despite their imposing size, Maine Coons have a friendly, sociable and affectionate character.
Their behaviour is often compared to that of dogs: they love games, happily follow their owner around and get on well with children and other pets. Their long, dense coat and plumed tail give them a wild appearance, but they are generally easy to look after (weekly brushing is usually enough).
Typical health problems: Maine Coons are generally healthy and have a life expectancy of ~9 to 15 years. Even so, the breed carries a few hereditary risks to bear in mind:
Hip dysplasia (HD): Because of their large build, Maine Coons are prone to hip dysplasia, a hip joint disorder that can cause pain and osteoarthritis.
HCM (Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy): A hereditary heart disease in which the heart muscle thickens. HCM is relatively common in Maine Coons and can lead to heart failure.
PL (Patellar Luxation): A dislocation of the kneecap (knee problems) that can occur in larger cats.
Other conditions: Maine Coons can also be predisposed to spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) and polycystic kidney disease (PKD), although these occur less frequently.
The costs of diagnosing and treating the conditions above can mount up considerably – think X-rays, MRI scans, cardiac ultrasounds, surgery or lifelong medication. Insuring a Maine Coon is therefore a sensible move: good cat insurance covers a large part of these medical costs, so you are not faced with financial surprises and can always provide the best care.

Frequently asked questions about Maine Coon insurance
Do you have any other questions?
Why should I insure my Maine Coon?
Maine Coons are prone to a number of hereditary conditions such as hip dysplasia (HD), heart problems (HCM) and joint problems. Treatments can run to hundreds or even thousands of euros.
Are hereditary conditions in Maine Coons reimbursed?
That depends on the insurer. OHRA and Univé do reimburse hereditary conditions, as long as they were not already present when the policy was taken out. PetSecur and InShared exclude hereditary conditions as standard. Figo usually reimburses them, unless they are linked to extreme breeding for appearance.
Is cat insurance for a Maine Coon more expensive than for other cats?
Yes, sometimes. Because Maine Coons are larger and run a higher risk of certain conditions, some insurers charge a higher premium. This differs per provider and also depends on age, the cover you choose and the own risk.
What does cat insurance for a Maine Coon cost on average?
The monthly premium varies between € 10 and € 30 per month, depending on:
The insurer you choose
The level of cover (basic or extended)
The own risk and the reimbursement per claim
The age and health of your cat
What should I look out for when comparing cat insurance?
Pay close attention to:
Reimbursement of hereditary conditions
The level of the annual maximum reimbursement
Own contribution and own risk
Cover for expensive treatments (e.g. surgery, HCM scans)
Waiting period and exclusions in the terms and conditions
