The history of OHRA

OHRA is one of the best-known insurance companies in the Netherlands, helped by the fact that the company was founded almost 100 years ago. In recent years OHRA has been known mainly for its television advertising. On top of that, OHRA is part of the Delta Lloyd group.

Insurance products at OHRA

You can take out a wide range of policies with OHRA. Think of health insurance, legal expenses insurance, contents insurance, home insurance, travel insurance and pet insurance.

The cost of OHRA pet insurance

OHRA’s pet insurance covers dog insurance and cat insurance. For both types of pet insurance OHRA has put together 3 different packages:

  • Basic (maximum reimbursement of € 2.500 per year)
  • Plus (maximum reimbursement of € 3.500 per year)
  • Top (maximum reimbursement of € 5.000 per year)

With every package your pet is in any case covered for all necessary operations and a consultation with a vet of your choice. These packages also apply to all breeds and cross-breeds.

OHRA cat insurance

OHRA gives you the option of taking out dog insurance, but cat lovers can also turn to this insurer for cover. Cat insurance can save you a considerable amount over the course of a year. Premiums for cats are somewhat lower than for dogs, which has to do with the animal’s weight and size. Here too you put the premium together entirely yourself: you decide how much you want to pay each month.

With cat insurance you again get to choose between two types of package. The medical cover applies to all medical operations and procedures. Vaccinations and the cost of, for example, an ultrasound scan do not fall under this, as those can only be reimbursed through the optional packages. It is useful to list all your requirements for yourself first, so you can make a choice more easily.

Liability insurance is not available for cats, although fortunately that is never really needed for a cat. OHRA’s cat insurance is an excellent entry-level policy. Thanks to the adjustable premium, anyone can put together cover that matches exactly what they have in mind for their cat.

OHRA dog insurance

OHRA offers the option of taking out dog insurance for your pet. With this policy you can claim back virtually all costs from OHRA itself, which can save a considerable amount of money over a year. When you take out a policy with OHRA you decide entirely how the premium is built up, so you also decide how high the premium will be.

With dog cover you can distinguish between the medical expenses packages and the optional add-ons. The medical expenses packages relate to all medical treatments; the add-ons are there to reimburse other costs. For the latter, think of the cost of vaccination, cremation or neutering your dog.

It is also possible to take out dog liability insurance for your dog. That means you are not left standing on your own if your dog damages something or injures someone. The advantage of OHRA is that its dog policies are easy to put together, so you always keep control over the premium you pay each month.

How do I claim with OHRA?

Many people wonder how to submit a claim to OHRA, because it is still tucked away somewhat and not exactly easy to find. That is why we would like to give you a hand.

Step 1: go to the website

OHRA lets you claim online, so you no longer have to call a helpdesk. All you need is an OHRA account for the website, or you can go to the ‘claims’ heading at the bottom of the site’s home page. That takes you to a follow-up page where you fill in the details of your claim.

Step 2: make sure you have all the details

There are a few things to take into account. Say you have an invoice from a vet: then make sure you have all the details to hand when filling it in. You have to state how often the animal has already been treated, what work the vet carried out and what the total price including VAT is. All of this is needed to claim easily; without these details you will be busy contacting the helpdesk for quite a while.

Step 3: check whether you need approval

In some cases you also need approval from OHRA for a claim, mainly for the more expensive treatments or invoices. In emergencies this is of course not necessary, but if there is no great hurry you can first check whether something is reimbursed before you actually have the treatment carried out.

Step 4: read the small print

OHRA’s pet policy also contains some small print. For instance, you are only officially insured 30 days after taking out pet insurance. There are a few exceptions to this: you are covered when it comes to an accident or to having an ID chip fitted.

Step 5: when in doubt, contact the helpdesk after all

You may of course not be sure whether a particular cost can be claimed or not. In those cases it is still useful to contact the helpdesk. At OHRA you can do this via the website, or you can call, of course. You will have to wait on hold for a while, but that is simply how it is. When in doubt this is always recommended, because missing out on a claim can cost quite a lot of money.

How do I cancel my OHRA policy?

Cancelling an insurance policy is always a bit of a hassle, because the insurer would of course much rather you stayed with them. At OHRA it is not too bad: here you can cancel a pet insurance policy relatively quickly. To make things easier for you again, here are the steps for cancelling an OHRA policy.

Step 1: go to your My OHRA account

After your first year, pet insurance can be cancelled on any day at OHRA. You can arrange all of this yourself via My OHRA, so in the same place as when you claim an invoice. Have you taken out a 4-year contract for your animal? Then you can only cancel the policy after those 4 years. Please note: OHRA applies a notice period of 1 month. So bear this in mind if you know you will want to cancel early.

Step 2: explain the situation behind the cancellation

Your pet may have died, which at OHRA is also a valid reason to cancel a policy. For this you do need a declaration of death, which you will receive from the vet. Send it to OHRA at this address: OHRA, Postbus 40000, 6803 GA Arnhem. They end the policy from the day your pet died, so in this case you do not have to take that 1-month notice period into account. Any premium you have paid too much will of course be refunded by OHRA.

Step 3: let them know if the owner changes

If your pet changes owner you will also have to let OHRA know, because a slightly different arrangement applies here. They need proof that your pet has changed owner. This can be a transfer declaration, proof of deregistration with the municipality, or a handover certificate from the shelter. Send this to: OHRA, Postbus 40000, 6803 GA Arnhem as well. For the rest, all the steps in My OHRA speak for themselves. So at OHRA it is generally arranged quickly; you just have to make sure you fill in everything about your pet’s policy precisely.
