With pet insurance in the Netherlands you can insure a dog, cat, rabbit or parrot. Below you will find more information about the types of pets that can be insured.
1. Dogs

2. Cats
As with dogs, you can take out cat insurance with insurers such as OHRA, Figo Pet, Petsecur, Inshared and Univé. These policies help cover the medical costs of your cat, from routine care to unexpected emergencies.
3. Rabbits
If you want to insure your rabbit, Figo Pet is the only insurer in the Netherlands that offers dedicated rabbit insurance.
4. Parrots
As with rabbits, Figo Pet is the only insurer in the Netherlands that lets you insure parrots.
Dogs and cats are by far the pets most often insured. Of those two, dog insurance is the most common by some distance. Dogs tend to need more medical care and treatment than other pets because of their active lifestyle and their tendency towards conditions such as joint problems, allergies and illness.
Cats are frequently insured too, mainly because, like dogs, they are prone to a range of medical conditions and need regular vet visits.

If you want more certainty for your pet, you can choose a higher monthly premium and carry less financial risk. If you are willing to take on more risk, you can go for a lower premium.
Own risk
Just as for people, an own risk applies to pets too. It differs per insurer and also depends on the package you choose. The own risk can be a fixed amount per invoice, or a percentage of the invoice.
Maximum payout

Up to what age can I insure my pet?
Whether you can take out pet insurance depends on both the insurer and the specific pet you have. These are the maximum ages for taking out a policy with the different insurers:
- Inshared accepts pets up to age 6.
- Petsecur accepts pets up to age 7.
- Figo Pet has no age limit, so there is no restriction on the age of your pet.
- With Univé you can take out any cover for dogs under 8 and cats under 10. If your pet is older when you take out the policy, they only offer “Accidents” cover.
What does pet insurance cost?
Pet insurance in the Netherlands starts from € 7,27 per month. Keep in mind that these are starting rates and that the final cost can vary depending on several factors.
What is the cheapest pet insurance?
Figo Pet is currently the cheapest pet insurance. It is important to note, though, that many cheap pet insurance policies do not cover every medical cost.
