Compiled by Jordy VinkPet insurance specialistPremiums checked on Updated 30 July 2026We may receive compensationHow we compareDog insurance ensures that your dog is covered for medical costs. This makes it easier and less stressful to treat your sick dog. It works much like health insurance does for people.
There is also dog liability insurance, which covers damage your dog causes. This is an additional policy you can take out alongside a dog’s medical expenses cover.
For people it is usually clear that insurance needs to be arranged, and the options are better known. For dogs this is often still a grey area. We want to provide more clarity so you can choose a dog insurance policy with confidence.
Dog insurance is comparable to the insurance we know for people. There are different basic premiums as well as supplementary ones. The policy depends heavily on the life stage your dog is in.
A young dog is likely to need very different medical care than an older dog. It is therefore impossible to say which dog insurance is the best or the cheapest, as this depends on several factors. The best-known insurers currently offering dog insurance are: OHRA, Petsecur, Figo Pet, Unive, and InShared.
For English-speaking visitors to our website we have also created a landing page for dog insurance: Dog Insurance Netherlands.
You want the best care for your loyal companion, which is why taking out dog insurance is sensible. Besides the usual costs of owning a dog there are also medical costs. Medical costs for your dog can run high, so it is wise to be insured against these sometimes unexpected expenses.
If you have your dog sterilised or neutered, you can easily pay € 200. You can insure yourself against costs like these, but above all against unexpected costs, such as sudden illness or an accident requiring surgery. That is why it is useful to compare dog insurance.
You can insure your dog, with supplementary cover, against almost all costs arising from an accident involving your pet. The level of cover depends on the insurer and the package you take out. You can insure your dog for, among other things:
A study shows that 56% of Dutch households own a pet. That includes dogs, possibly yours. Suppose you travel to the south of France for a few weeks with your two dogs, your family and your caravan.
You and your children are insured against anything that might happen. If your dogs suddenly fall ill because of the climate, or one of them breaks a leg, you face unexpectedly high costs. An operation for your pet can easily cost a few thousand euros. With dog insurance you do not have to worry about that.
Every country has different legislation on insuring your dog. On this page you can read more about this. If you are confident that you can treat your dog yourself, comparing dog insurance is of course not necessary. Using the information on this website you can, for example, easily remove a tick from your dog or carry out a similar procedure
The cost of dog insurance is made up of various factors that influence the price of the policy for your dog. Dogs that generally fall ill sooner carry a higher premium. How this is determined depends on the following, among other things:
Below we explain in more detail why the price of your dog insurance differs as a result.
The cost of dog insurance differs per insurance company. Below are the current starting prices for insuring your dog.
| Insurance company | Cost per month (from) |
|---|---|
| Petsecur | € 10,45 |
| Figo Pet | € 10,63 |
| Inshared | € 11,95 |
| Univé | € 36,20 |
| Dierenverzekering.nl | € 13,44 |
Your dog’s gender can determine whether it falls ill sooner or later. In general, females fall ill sooner than males. This is partly because females can become pregnant and are therefore more prone to complications than males.
On average, dog insurance for a female is therefore considerably more expensive than for a male.
Treatments for your dog also differ per breed. Chihuahuas, for example, are easier to treat and recover more quickly than the Dobermann just mentioned. The monthly premium for a Dobermann will therefore be considerably higher than for a Chihuahua insurance. This is how it can differ per breed.
It is easiest to compare your dog’s insurance per insurer on the provider’s own website, so you see the most recent prices per breed. We have also built a specific comparison module for the English Bulldog insurance, French Bulldog insurance and the Jack Russell insurance.
Your dog’s age is also important when taking out dog insurance. A newborn puppy in perfect health will have a much lower premium than a dog that is already above average age. Some insurers do not even allow older dogs to be insured, as at Hema. You should therefore check the terms of all pet insurers carefully.
Heavier dogs can break a leg sooner than lighter dogs. This also depends partly on your dog’s breed. A Chihuahua, for example, does not grow very large, yet the premium is higher for a heavier Chihuahua than for a lighter one.
The same applies to larger (adult) dogs such as a Dobermann. These dogs grow much larger than a Chihuahua. Here too, the premium is higher for a heavier Dobermann than for a lighter one.
Almost every dog insurance policy has a deductible. With the maximum insured amount you pay a lower premium on your dog insurance. If your deductible for such an operation is € 10, the monthly premium for your dog insurance will be very high.
You could also pay a deductible of € 1.000, in which case the monthly premium for your dog insurance will be considerably lower than a policy with a € 10 deductible. Our advice is always to choose a middle ground where you neither pay too high a premium nor accept too high a maximum deductible. This is how you take out the best dog insurance.
Do you have more questions?
Dog insurance can cover various types of medical costs and healthcare for your dog, depending on the specific plan you choose. These are the typical covers you can expect in a dog insurance policy: accidents, illness costs, surgical procedures, medication, vet visits, diagnostic tests, rehabilitation therapies, dental care and alternative therapies
The best dog insurance is the policy from Petsecur. It is the highest-rated and most frequently taken out dog insurance since 2023.
The cost of dog insurance varies depending on several factors, such as the type of dog, your dog’s age, the chosen level of cover and the insurance company. Dog insurance costs from € 10,63 per month at Figo Pet.
Dog insurance is usually calculated on the basis of various factors, such as your dog’s age, breed, gender, location, level of cover, deductible, maximum payout and cover options.
Petsecur currently has the cheapest dog insurance, from € 10,45 per month. At Figo Pet, dog insurance is available from € 10,63 per month. It is important to note, however, that many cheap dog insurance policies do not cover all medical costs.
A good dog insurance policy can vary considerably depending on several factors, including your personal needs, budget and your dog’s health. Consider the cover, costs, waiting periods, reviews, network of vets, restrictions and customer service.
Taking out dog insurance is a personal decision and depends on several factors. Reasons to take out dog insurance include: financial security, peace of mind, preventive care options and freedom to choose your vet. Reasons not to take out dog insurance include: monthly costs, self-funding, exclusions and restrictions, and risk assessment.
The age at which you can insure your dog varies depending on the insurance company and the plan you are considering. The following age limits currently apply for older dogs:
OHRA, PetSecur and Dierenverzekering.nl offer dog insurance without a deductible. This does mean that your dog is not covered for every type of cover.
