The Labrador Retriever has been one of the most popular dog breeds in the Netherlands for years – energetic, sociable and extremely loyal. Anyone with a Labrador at home knows that this breed not only gives plenty of affection, but also benefits from the right care. Because of their active nature and their predisposition to certain hereditary conditions, good dog insurance for a Labrador is far from an unnecessary luxury.
Above you will find an overview of the Labrador as a breed, plus a comparison of five Dutch pet insurers (PetSecur, Figo Pet, OHRA, InShared and Univé) on premium, cover, waiting periods, hereditary conditions and more. That way you choose the best policy for your Labrador – one that suits both your dog and your budget.
The Labrador is known as a friendly, intelligent and enthusiastic dog. It is a true family dog that gets on well with children and other animals. Labradors are energetic, love retrieving, swimming and running – and therefore need plenty of exercise. They weigh 25 to 35 kg on average, with males often heavier than females. Their eager nature and their tendency to eat anything they come across also make them prone to obesity.
Labradors are generally robust dogs, but they do have an increased risk of a number of hereditary or breed-related conditions:
Hip dysplasia (HD): A common joint condition in large dogs, in which the hip joint does not form properly. This can lead to pain and lameness.
Elbow dysplasia (ED): Like HD, this is an abnormality of the joint, but in the front legs. This too can lead to lameness and ultimately osteoarthritis.
Obesity: Labradors are prone to putting on weight quickly, which in turn can cause other health problems such as diabetes or joint complaints.
Allergies: Food allergies and skin problems in particular occur regularly in Labradors.
Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA): A hereditary eye condition that can lead to blindness.
Ear infections: Because of their floppy ears, Labradors suffer from ear problems more often, especially if they swim a lot.
The cost of tests, surgery, medication or physiotherapy can quickly run into hundreds or thousands of euros. That is why dog insurance for a Labrador is not an unnecessary luxury but a smart way to protect your dog against unexpected costs.
Do you have any other questions?
Labradors are prone to hereditary conditions such as hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia and PRA (an eye disease), and they also have a predisposition to obesity and allergies. Treatment for these conditions can be expensive. With dog insurance you are protected against unexpected vet bills and can give your dog the best possible care — without the financial stress.
On average you pay between € 15 and € 35 per month for a Labrador, depending on:
Age of the dog
Chosen cover (basic or extended)
Own risk or own contribution
Additional packages (such as dental or physiotherapy)
Because Labradors are medium to large dogs with an increased risk of certain conditions, the premium is often slightly higher than for small dogs.
Most dog insurance policies cover:
Vet consultations
Surgery and hospitalisation
Medication
Diagnostics (such as blood tests, X-rays, MRI/CT)
Specialist care
Emergency care
You can often extend the policy with additional cover for:
Dental treatment
Physiotherapy
Vaccinations and worming
Neutering or spaying
Euthanasia and cremation
That varies from insurer to insurer:
OHRA and Univé do reimburse hereditary conditions such as HD and ED (provided they are not already present when you take out the policy).
PetSecur and InShared exclude hereditary conditions as standard.
Figo Pet usually covers hereditary conditions, unless they result from extreme breeding for appearance.
So it is important to check the policy conditions carefully if you want to insure your Labrador.
With most insurers you can insure your puppy from 6 or 8 weeks of age. The younger you start, the lower the premium and the smaller the chance that conditions are excluded as ‘pre-existing’.
