What is cat insurance?

Cat insurance is comparable to dog insurance. Cats and dogs need different care, so their policies differ as well. Both dog and cat insurance cover most medical costs, depending on the policy you choose.

For English-speaking visitors to our website we have also created a landing page for cat insurance: Cat Insurance Netherlands.

Comparing cat insurance in the Netherlands

Why compare cat insurance?

On our website you can compare the different cat insurance policies and take out cover online.

You take out the policy directly with the insurer — we only provide a tool to help you choose the right cat insurance. This makes it easy to see what each insurer does and does not cover.

Do you have a pedigree cat such as a Maine Coon? Then it is extra important to check the cover for hereditary conditions and specialist care. See our dedicated page on insuring a Maine Coon for a comparison tailored entirely to this popular breed.

What am I covered for with cat insurance?

You can insure your cat against almost every cost you incur if something happens to your pet. The level of cover depends on the insurer and on the package you take out. The cheapest cat insurance is therefore not automatically the best cat insurance. You can insure your cat for, among other things:

Your insurer’s policy conditions set out what is and is not covered by the basic policy. The conditions cover treatments such as:

  • Admission and stay at a clinic
  • Medicines
  • Euthanasia
  • Cremation
  • X-ray examination
  • Vaccination
  • Blood test
  • Medical costs abroad

For specific questions about cover and treatments you can also contact the insurers via social media or their websites.

Is my cat ill?

Several signs can tell you whether your cat is ill: a cat that suddenly stops eating, no longer wants to be cuddled, meows a great deal or is no longer house-trained. These are signals that something is wrong and that a visit to the vet is needed.

The vet will examine your pet further and draw up a treatment plan on that basis. If in doubt, always visit the vet to make sure your cat does not get worse.
For these visits and further treatment you can insure your pet with cat insurance.

If your cat needs surgery and you cannot afford it, your cat will suffer. If you pay a monthly premium, you do not have to worry about the unexpected costs that can follow an accident. Use our comparison tool and arrange cover for your cat straight away.

Insuring a cat in the Netherlands

All cat insurance policies

Why does the price of each cat insurance policy vary?

The price of a cat insurance policy can vary. It is determined by the own risk and by any supplementary cover, and it also differs by the breed and age of your cat. Factors taken into account in the final price include:

  • Insurer
  • Sex of your cat (male or female)
  • Weight of your cat
  • Age of your cat
  • Breed of your cat
  • Own risk on your cat insurance

Insurer

The cost of cat insurance differs per insurer. The current starting prices for insuring your cat are shown below.

InsurerCost per month (from)
OHRA€ 12,28
Petsecur€ 9,99
Figo Pet€ 7,27
Inshared€ 11,95
Univé€ 17,42
Dierenverzekering.nl€ 12,96

Sex of your cat

The sex of your cat can influence how quickly it falls ill. In general, female cats fall ill sooner than males, partly because they can become pregnant and are therefore more prone to complications. On average, vet costs and cat insurance are slightly more expensive for a female cat than for a male.

Weight of your cat

Heavier cats are more likely to break a leg than lighter ones: the heavier the cat, the more mass it carries, and gravity works harder on landing after a jump. This also depends in part on the breed of your cat.

Age of your cat

The age of your cat also matters when taking out the best cat insurance. For a young kitten you pay a much lower premium than for an adult cat.

With some insurers, such as Petplan, it is not even possible to insure older cats, because the risk of death is highest in this group. Always read the terms and conditions carefully before taking out pet insurance.

Breed of your cat

The treatments your cat needs also differ per breed. It is easiest to compare policies on each provider’s own website, where you will find the most recent prices per cat breed.

Maximum own risk on your cat insurance

Almost every cat insurance policy has an own risk. If the own risk on your cat insurance for such a treatment is € 10, the monthly premium will be very high. You can also choose an own risk of € 1.000, in which case the fixed monthly amount will be considerably lower than with an own risk of € 10.

Our advice is to choose a middle course: neither too high a premium nor too high a maximum own risk. That way you avoid the unexpectedly high costs that pet insurance is designed to cover.

Frequently asked questions about cat insurance

Do you have more questions?

What is the best cat insurance?

The best cat insurance is the policy from Petsecur. It is the highest rated and most frequently purchased cat insurance since 2023.

The cost of cat insurance varies depending on several factors, such as the type of cat, its age, the chosen level of cover and the insurer. Starting prices for cat insurance are as follows:

  • Inshared from € 12,28 per month.
  • Petsecur from € 9,99 per month.
  • Figo Pet from € 7,27 per month.
  • Aegon from € 9,37 per month.
  • Univé from € 9,37 per month.
  • Dierenverzekering.nl from € 12,96 per month.

The age up to which you can insure your cat varies by insurer and by the specific plan. The following age limits currently apply to older cats:

  • InShared accepts cats up to 6 years.
  • Aegon accepts cats up to 6 years.
  • Petsecur accepts cats up to 7 years.
  • Figo Pet accepts cats up to 6 years.
  • Aegon accepts cats up to 6 years.
  • Univé accepts cats up to 10 years.
    • If your cat is older than 10, Univé still offers “Accidents” cover.

Figo Pet is currently considered the cheapest cat insurance. Cover is available from € 7,27 per month. Note that many cheap cat insurance policies do not cover all medical costs.

Petsecur and Dierenverzekering.nl offer cat insurance without an own risk. This does mean, however, that your cat is not covered for everything.
